Le gouvernement du Canada établira des normes sur la production de rapports relativement aux paiements versés aux gouvernements au Canada et à l’étranger par les entreprises canadiennes œuvrant dans les secteurs de l’exploitation minière, pétrolière et gazière. Les entreprises d’extraction doivent souvent verser des paiements afférents aux droits de permis, aux frais de location ou droits d’entrée, aux redevances et autres. Grâce à l’imposition de normes sur la production de rapports, les Canadiens pourront savoir comment les dépenses de ces entreprises sont engagées, ce qui assurera une meilleure transparence et contribuera à établir des règles du jeu équitables pour les entreprises menant des activités au Canada et à l’échelle mondiale.

Les activités peuvent comprendre ce qui suit :

  • l’adoption d’une loi sur les rapports obligatoires que doivent produire les entreprises des secteurs de l’exploitation minière, pétrolière et gazière;
  • l’imposition aux entreprises d’extraction de l’obligation de publier des données sur les paiements qu’elles versent aux gouvernements au Canada et à l’échelle mondiale.

I whole heartedly support comprehensive mandatory reporting standards for extractive companies. Having been involved in international sustainable development for over 40 yrs I have experienced first hand the positive influence such information can have on all the stakeholders in such circumstances. Accountability is a key to establishing a system which will be sustainable and just to all concerned.

The Canadian Mining Companies, along with oil, and gas companies whether in Canada or outside Canadian borders, must be transparent and accountable to Canadians for the impacts they are having on our environment and with regards to human rights! They must be accountable and subject to Canadian laws regardless of where they operate! The situation with Canadian Mining companies, especially in South America, Asia and Africa, is outrageous!

Canada should respect the environment to include the rights of people to stay on their native land. There is no reason to allow mining companies to chase away low income people especially in power countries. Those companies should come back and invest that money here so that people can have more jobs and contribute to the better Canada. It can be more valuable if these mining companies can empower agriculture to fight hunger so people can get food worldwide.

I support mandatory reporting by Canadian extractive companies to the jurisdiction in which they are operating and all extractive companies operating in Canada. This information should be reported in such a way as to make it readily accessible to those who are interested.

I support mandatory transparency in the extractive industries. The need for accountability at home and in the countries these corporations operate in was the subject of round table discussions several years ago. Voluntary recommendations are not enough. We need a truly independent ombudsman with power to enforce transparency and accountability from the mining companies, especially in countries with little or unenforced regulation to protect the local people, their livelihood and the environment. Canada should lead the way with high standards.

Mandatory reporting for extractive corporations in the USA stock exchanges has proven to be a very useful tool in the efforts to tackle rent seeking behavior in resource-rich developing countries, making this usually opaque economic sector much more transparent. Besides, it can also increase awareness, transparency and social participation in the Canadian extractive sector. This initiative should be part of the OGP commitments.

No brainer. Having travelled in Latin America extensively and seen first hand the problems people face I strongly urge action which will provide citizens with good information and empower them to make knowledgeable decisions. Canada has a reputation to uphold but it cannot done unless some action is taken in this regard.

I wholeheartedly support this as government transparency is a key step toward increasing democracy in Canada, which at this point has been seen as being on the decline. Canadians need to be able to find the information they need to make informed decisions on the projects the government is proposing.

I support this idea with the same sense of obviousness that I support the idea of eating food in order to survive. Reporting of ALL kinds of data with regards to resource management should be reported, in detail, for the Canadian public to see. Transparency is honesty, and honesty is a hard requirement for the survival of a conscious, global species. If we cannot see what our other hands are doing, we will never develop the social resilience needed to resolve the most major of our issues (and by extension, achieve our greatest of hopes and dreams). This is a good place to start, Canada. Begin leading the world by the example of courageous honesty, because it will show the world just how operationally efficient a transparent economic environment can be. Please include mandatory reporting in Canada's next OGP action plan!
